Artist's statement

I make photographs to come to terms with material circumstance and social context. I also consider the act of photographic production to be important as an instrument to defy prescriptive role allocations and institutionalism. My work typically involves series of photographs assembled over extended periods of time and, increasingly, I am involved in the development of publications that incorporate these.

Common Ground

Common Ground

With Simon Guy

2015—2017

Common Ground is a collaboration between photographer A.J. Pretorius and writer Simon Guy. The book raises and explores the tensions, contradictions and questions that result from different claims to shared physical and social space. Interleaving photographs and text, it was designed to avoid fixed meanings and to encourage reflection and dialogue.

Unhome

Unhome

2012—2015

UNHOME is a photographic study of immigration and belonging. In it, photographer A.J. Pretorius captures the state of suspension between the familiar and foreign that characterises relocation. As an immigrant himself, the photographer challenges more common non-√©migr√© depictions of immigration. — Book release
